FAQs

Q: How can I find sponsors for the camp?

A: Start by approaching local businesses within the construction industry, such as residential homebuilders, hardware stores, construction companies, and professional associations. Highlight the benefits of supporting the camp, such as community engagement and brand visibility. Prepare a sponsorship package that outlines different levels of support and the corresponding benefits for sponsors.

Q: What are some effective strategies for marketing the camp?

A: Leverage social media platforms, local community boards, and industry newsletters to reach your target audience. Partnering with schools, youth organizations, and women's groups can also help spread the word. Consider hosting informational sessions or open houses to generate interest and provide more details about the camp.

Q: How do I find a suitable venue for the camp?

A: Look for venues that can safely accommodate construction activities and a group of participants. Community centers, local schools with workshop facilities, or donated space from construction companies are excellent options. Ensure the venue has adequate space for both indoor presentations and hands-on activities.

Q: What should the camper-to-instructor ratio be to ensure safety and quality instruction?

A: We recommend a ratio of at least one instructor for every three campers. This ensures that each camper receives enough supervision and guidance, particularly during hands-on activities involving tools and equipment.

Q: How do I recruit qualified instructors and volunteers?

A: Reach out to your local homebuilders association, Professional Women in Building Councils, trade schools and colleges with construction programs to find instructors with the necessary expertise. For volunteers, contact local community groups and post opportunities on volunteer websites. Ensure all staff and volunteers undergo background checks.

Q: What kind of liability insurance do I need?

A: Obtain general liability insurance to cover any accidents or injuries that might occur during the camp. Consult with an insurance agent who specializes in events or educational programs to ensure you have adequate coverage.

Q: What materials and tools will I need, and how can I acquire them cost-effectively?

A: You'll need basic construction materials and tools such as wood, nails, hammers, saws, and safety gear. Consider asking local hardware stores for donations or discounts. Sponsors may also be willing to provide materials as part of their contribution. Volunteers can also bring their own tools for campers to borrow for the day. Ideally, if the venue is at a trades school many of the tools will be readily available.

Q: What if one of our speakers is unable to attend last minute?

A: It’s a good idea to have at least two “Substitute Teachers” on standby with a presentation ready just in case one of the speakers is sick or has an emergency on camp day. We also recommend having a few extra volunteers on standby.
